Specialties on Community Learning Disability Teams

 

Administrative Support – The Team Secretary is the contact point for Community Learning Disability Teams.

 

Art Therapy -- Offers assessment and treatment through the use of art materials to help individuals find an outlet for complex and difficult emotions, and encourage self-awareness and growth.

 

Challenging Behaviour Team -- A representative of this regional service liases with Teams to provide additional intensive assessment, treatment, staff training and on-site support to individuals with particularly severe or persistent challenging behaviour.

 

Clinical Psychology -- Offers assessment of behavioural difficulties, intellectual and cognitive functioning, and living skills and intervention for challenging behaviour, inter-personal skills issues, and emotional difficulties.

 

Community Nursing -- Offers assessment and advice relating to health care needs, as well as input with education and social needs.  Community Nursing works with both adults and children.

 

Dietetics -- Offers assessment and monitoring of nutritional status, advice on suitable dietary modifications including the use of naso-gastric and gastrostomy feeding, and promotion of healthy eating

 

Epilepsy Service – Offers assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with epilepsy.  Advice is available on new treatments.  Training is offered to families and carers in dealing with all types of seizures.  Clinics are held in various locations in Edinburgh, and Mid and West Lothian.

 

Occupational Therapy – Offers assessment and treatment in the areas of personal, domestic, leisure and work activities and community living skills, as well as assessing a client's environmental and equipment needs.

 

Physiotherapy -- Offers advice, help and training for any physical problems including positioning, walking, wheelchairs, specialist seating and orthotics.  We also provide a service for emergency chest care.

 

Psychiatry -- Offers assessment, diagnosis, recommendations about management, and treatment of people with a learning disability who have additional mental health problems, challenging behaviour, or offending behaviour.  They also provide specialist epilepsy service (above) for those people with difficult to manage seizures.

 

Social Work -- A representative of the Social Services Department liases with Teams, offering advice on services which are available from local Community Care Practice Teams.

 

Speech & Language Therapy  -- Offers assessment, diagnosis, treatment, advice and training on all aspects of communication, swallowing and eating/drinking.
